The Sumi Collection is named after the Japanese tradition of Suminagashi marbling. This ancient art form involves floating richly colored inks in water to create naturally emerging patterns. Drawing on this time-honored technique the pattern is formed by the ebb of ink flowing and floating on water. When translated into a variety of textiles, the subtlest gestures create a ripple effect, amplifying outwards, creating a truly engaging fabric. Bringing this traditional process beyond the limits of the fibrous washi paper it is habitually printed upon, the Sumi Collection is a vehicle for suminagashi to transcend paper into textiles and home goods.
