Aperture Luminous SkyCeiling

Aperture SkyCeilings are circular or elliptical virtual skylights that modify our perception of planar relationships through a bi-sensory oculus that heightens the spatial plausibility of open sky. Aperture generates its potent biophilic illusion by incorporating three new features: 1st, no support grid across the opening; 2nd, a 7/8” gap or interstice between the image panel and the trim; and 3rd, a hidden mechanical wall with a reflective surface that prevents the viewer from perceiving a distinct edge to the sky image. Aperture creates a palpable perception of depth when standing directly beneath the portal, as well as a distinct lateral continuum of sky when viewed from all other angles. The result—a visceral illusion of open sky with no discernible boundary. This spatial ambiguity leads the brain’s perceptual calculus to a credible illusion that, along with the image’s recessive blue hue, signals an expanse of sky, unbounded in all directions.
