Description
Designed by Ezra Ardolino of Timbur – a digital fabrication company with years of experience solving complex architectural challenges for clients like Bjarke Ingels Group and Daniel Arsham – Stack is a raw yet refined line of digitally-fabricated, stack-laminated wooden furniture. The collection is made up of four individual pieces – Stack Stool, Stack Seat, Stack Bench, and Stack Table – with a pure cylindrical form and subtle forward lean. Aside from Stack Seat, which is distinguished by its ergonomic concave seat scoop, each piece features a flat top and compound radiused edge.Stack is produced using a complex and multi-step fabrication technique called stack lamination. During this process – which oscillates between additive and subtractive fabrication – large sheets of plywood are machined into rough shapes using a 3-axis CNC flatbed router, stack-laminated by hand into large blocks that approximate the desired form, re-machined to remove excess material, then hand-sanded and finished to perfection. Made with FSC-certified Baltic birch plywood, Stack transcends our collective understanding of a long-used building material that is typically sought after for its strong core and finished with a pretty veneer. Instead, this collection is intentionally minimal, foregrounding the unique textural quality of natural, unfinished plywood edge grain that reveals itself during the stack lamination process. This unconventional application of a traditional material is central to Timbur’s design ethos. Available in four standard finishes that allow the plywood’s natural texture to shine through – matte clear, translucent PMS, clear oil, and black oil – Stack is equally at home in both residential and hospitality settings.
