Wild Feast Picnic Basket for Wallpaper* Handmade

In 2013, for the ?Handmade with Jaguar? exhibition, Wallpaper* commissioned Neri&Hu to create a one-off bespoke object to celebrate the marriage of craftsmanship and design. ?Wild Feast? reconsiders a very traditional British item?the picnic basket?and reinterprets it by bringing in Chinese elements. The name ?Wild Feast? is a literal translation of the two characters that made up ?picnic? in China. Inspired by the ubiquitous Asian lunch box, or biandang, the basket is composed of a series of stacked boxes. Constructing out of carbon fiber gives it a unique structural integrity which actually allows for a degree of porosity. As such, the relationship between the interior and exterior of the box is very much architectural. The spatial and sectional quality of the object is emphasized as the basket offers glimpses of its precious contents and there is a blurring of public and private. Other materials include solid walnut and bronze, elevating the rather mundane object to a museum-quality piece worthy of the Jaguar brand.
