The Barclay?s Center Arena was constructed with a latticework composed of 12,000 pre-weathered steel panels created by Dissimilar Metal Design. The Weathering Steel was created by hand through technology developed by DMD. Staying respectful to its environment, the rustic hued patinas are intended to evoke the image of Brooklyn?s Brownstones, and the fa\u00e7ade?s beauty will enhance over time without comprising the integrity of the cladding. The design of this Weathering Steel was primarily done through two processes: the initial activation of the oxidation and the control of the wet \/ dry cycling. These processes, which happen in succession, formed the protective oxide layer. Creation of the correct initial protective oxidation was vital to not only achieving desirable aesthetic, but to ensure that the aging process was setup to take place at the right speed. If the protective oxidation isn?t allowed to mature on the surface, other harmful forms of oxidation set in and the metal structure will oxidize away and ultimately need to be replaced prematurely. The window for getting the protective rust to properly setup was extremely small and has taken us over 30 years of research to attain. Despite our understanding today, we continue to invest a great deal in research in the hopes to further push the boundaries of metallurgy, material science, structural engineering, and design. Taking a cue from the Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic, the metal?s natural variation permits the observer an emotional relation in urban discovery, while the natural variation in the materials will slowly continue to evolve over time. This continuous evolution moves in harmony with its surroundings, aging gracefully as in nature. Architects can specify any one of a myriad of wonderful building materials today, but few, if any material selections, can deliver the uniqueness that Weathering Steel is able to provide.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
