Description

After a successful Kickstarter campaign, Fireclay Tile has once again reinvented how traditional tile is manufactured. Its latest sustainable tile design breathes new life into an obsolete technology? CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) television and computer monitors, considered to be one of the hardest types of electronic waste to recycle. Fireclay devised unique molds to transform the electronic waste into beautiful gray glass tiles. The original color produces a smoky, dramatic quality to suit any interior or exterior residential or commercial application. The 100% locally recycled handmade glass tiles are available in gloss and matte finish in 2?x8?, 2?x4? and penny round mosaic sizes. Fireclay works with local electronics waste recycling company, ESC Refining in Santa Clara, CA. The company runs the glass through a saw to separate the front, middle, and back sections, which contain heavy metals and lead. Fireclay pays close attention to toxicology concerns and requires a very detailed chemical analysis to confirm it?s safe for use. Fireclay then crushes and demagnetizes the material. The multi-step crushing process ultimately produces glass particles small enough to melt when exposed to heat. After the glass is sorted, Fireclay casts the tiles in their own molds that can withstand temperatures of 1,600-1,700°F, and adds white color pigment to lighten the natural CRT glass, achieving a lighter gray color.
