Description

Yes, of course ceiling hooks exist, but they are not without problems. I developed a new type of ceiling hook that is safer and easier to install and offers much greater performance, holding well over 100 pounds. It looks pretty good too! Conventional hooks that accommodate swiveling are generally preferred in this industry since they will prevent unintentional detachment (unscrewing) from the ceiling should a load spin during use. Unfortunately, conventional swivel hooks include several parts that must be assembled during installation – a dangerous task when perched high up on a step ladder! To overcome these main concerns, I based my design on providing a safe swivel action using few parts. My design employs a base and a hook. The base includes a recess that snugly receives the head portion of a screw that has been secured to the ceiling. The hook portion is pivotally attached to the base so that it can selectively block the recess and thereby effectively capture the screw head when rotated to a down position. With this design, the user only has to install a single screw into the ceiling, a comparatively safe and easy task. Once the screw is secure, the installer snaps open the hook, captures the screw head and then snaps the hook closed – done! It kind of feels like operating a carabiner – very satisfying and very secure. To prevent the hook portion from accidentally opening during use, when a load is applied to the hook, the hook portion is allowed to slide down about 2mm. When it does, the hook becomes locked. Currently, a low cost version is available in three finishes (nickel, bronze and white). Solid stainless steel, solid brass and other versions are being developed as well. Special 2-head screws are included.
